Midsummer in Sweden.Midsummer eve at Skansen.June 24, 2011 The midsummer is celebrated very different in the Nordic countries. While Denmark and Norway is celebrating with bonfires, Sweden has another tradition. At midsummer eve which since 1953 is celebrated on the friday between 19 June and 26 June the Swedes raise and dance around a maypole (majstång or midsommarstång) The maypole is covered with greens and flowers. The tradition is like the bonfirers in Denmark and many other places in Europe a very old tradition and the first mention of the maypole is from the middle ages. The panorama is from the celebration at Skansen, the outdoor museum in Stockholm which is said to be the oldest outdoor museum in the world.. |
